How Often Do I Need To Replace Carpet?

Carpeting doesn’t last forever, but it can be hard to know when it’s time to replace yours. There’s not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ answer, but your carpet will definitely show signs when it’s time for replacement.
When you need to replace your carpet depends on the type of carpet you have, the level of traffic in the area it’s in, and how well you care for it. A good rule of thumb is to replace your carpet every 5-7 years, but carpet that’s especially well cared for (or carpet in a room not used often) can last up to 15 years. If you have pets or small children, though, the number of years carpet lasts may go down.
Your carpet will show signs when it’s time for a replacement. Here are a few signs to look for

The Carpet is Stained Beyond Repair

One stain on your carpet (especially if you know how to remove it) is no reason to replace. But, over time, especially in a kid-friendly and pet-friendly home, stains will add up. When you start to notice the stains more than you notice the beauty of your carpet, or if you’ve got an especially serious stain (like paint), it’s time to replace.

Noticeable Fading and/or Discoloration

It’s tough to avoid discoloration and fading because as your carpet gets older, sunlight, air, and cleaning routines can make even the most vibrant colors turn dull. We recommend replacing your carpet once you notice the discoloration instead of waiting for it to become obvious to others.

Flat Pile

No one likes the look of a flat carpet. If the pile of your carpet used to stand up and now appears matted, and no cleaning, fluffing, or combing does anything to help, it’s time for new, revived carpeting.
Even carpets with short fibers will wear out at some point. If you notice fraying around the edges, or if you can see the horizontal threads of the backing showing underneath the fibers, you need new carpeting.

Issues With Padding

Carpet padding is essential in helping your carpet feel nice and soft to walk on. It also helps to dampen the sounds of the room where the carpet is installed.
But, unlike carpet, stain removal isn’t always straightforward when it comes to padding. Sometimes, even professional services can’t reach the lower layer and the padding ends up collecting stains as time goes on, and that could lead to unpleasant odors and wrinkles in the carpet that can’t be smoothed out.
If your padding is past its prime, your carpeting probably is, too.

Allergies Worsen

Carpets, especially old carpets, are breeding grounds for germs and bacteria. The older the carpet is, the harder it becomes to remove those allergens, and they can start to affect your family members – especially those who have existing issues with allergies or asthma. Investing in newer carpets that have hypoallergenic qualities might be worth looking into.

You’re Ready for Change

When it comes right down to it, there doesn’t need to be a problem with your carpet for you to want to replace it. If you’re simply sick of your current carpeting and ready for a new look, then replacing is what you should do. After all, it’s your home, and you have the freedom to tailor it to your preferences!

The Right Time to Replace

The right time to replace carpeting is different for everyone, but if your carpets are showing signs of wear and tear, exuding a foul odor, or causing grief in any of the other ways we mentioned, it’s probably the right time for you.
