WHY YOU SHOULDN'T WEAR SHOES IN THE HOUSE

Germs are everywhere. But we may not always take the time to think about what that means for our houses. Think about all the places you go in a day — your car, the store, work, a public restroom. Your shoes go where you do. Wearing your shoes inside your house can cause wear and tear on your flooring and lead to health risks.

Here’s why you shouldn’t wear shoes in your house for the sake of you and your floors.

PREVENT SPREAD OF GERMS AND TOXINS

Your shoes inevitably pick up germs, pesticides, toxins, bacteria, and allergens like pollen. One study discovered that shoes carry 145 times as many bacteria on the outside of the shoe as the inside. Wearing shoes in your house tracks these germs and health hazards throughout it. That can increase your likelihood of getting sick as a result.

KEEP DIRT OFF YOUR FLOORS

Shoes also track in visible dirt, mud, and moisture, along with the bacteria, germs, and the other grime you can’t see. Bringing in toxins from outside is bad for your flooring and bad for the air quality of your home.

When you wear shoes inside, dirt can get on your floors and furniture. If you have tile flooring, dirt can cause discoloration of grout. It can also leave unsightly marks that turn into stains on other flooring.

Having dirty floors is particularly alarming if you have children or pets who like to roll around happily on the floor. If you wear shoes inside, your floors become a lot dirtier and more of a health risk.

MAKE CLEANING YOUR FLOORS EASIER

Floors need to be cleaned regularly to be kept in good condition. You’ll have to spend even more time mopping, scrubbing, vacuuming, or spot cleaning if you wear shoes inside.

When it comes to cleaning, homemade cleaning remedies often do the trick. Test any cleaners on a small, inconspicuous area before applying to your entire floor.

Along with cleaning, there are other ways to keep your floors in good condition. Consider the layout of your house. If you don’t have a garage, you inevitably have to step inside with shoes on. Put mats by your doors to wipe off your shoes right away and avoid stepping on your floor with shoes on. If you place a shoe rack at your door, that can help you get in the habit of taking your shoes off right away.

TO MAKE YOUR FLOORING LAST LONGER

Your flooring will last a lot longer without daily grime being tracked in by your shoes.

On hard flooring like wood or vinyl, shoes can cause dents, scratches, and scuffs. Shoes with soft soles aren’t as likely to do this as high heels or shoes with grooves that trap pebbles and dirt. Moisture from the bottom of shoes is also harmful for many kinds of hard flooring like wood or laminate. If water seeps into any cracks, it can cause warping and swelling.

The soles of shoes can be harsh on carpet. Small pebbles or debris stuck in your shoes can break down carpet fibers. Walking on carpet in your shoes also grinds dirt into the floor. Eventually, you’ll notice a worn down path where you walk on your carpet in shoes. and maybe even an odor. Those are a few of the signs it’s time to replace your carpet.

GIVE YOUR FEET A BREAK

Your feet need a break by the time you get home from your daily activities. Throughout the day, your shoes and socks trap in sweat. Damp feet create the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive. This can result in a stinky odor or even infections like athlete’s foot. Wearing shoes and socks longer than necessary only amplifies the chance of those things happening.

You can let your feet breathe at home. If you aren’t a fan of walking around barefoot, change into a clean pair of socks or house slippers.
