Pet-Friendly Flooring Options That Look Great

Pets can be really tough on our floors. When it’s time to upgrade or replace your floors, you want to choose pet-friendly flooring that looks great and is durable.

In a home with pets, you want material that is resistant to scratching and damage from accidents your pet may have. It also needs to give your pet traction and be comfortable for them to walk on.

CERAMIC TILE OR STONE

This is one of the best options out there when it comes to flooring for pet owners.

Ceramic and stone are two of the most waterproof options on the market, which is great for young and old animals alike. Both are also simple to clean and maintain and are incredibly scratch-resistant.

The major downside to ceramic and stone flooring is that they’re hard materials and can be cold in the winter. Make sure you’ve got a warm spot for your pet to lay. This can be an expensive option, but affordable flooring is available.

LUXURY VINYL

Luxury vinyl is a decent choice if you want to prioritize the look of your flooring.

This type of flooring is durable and won’t scratch or tear. It holds up well against accidents and water damage, too. It’s a low-maintenance flooring option, and it’s skid-resistant and comfortable for pets to walk on.

It’s not a desirable option when it comes to the resale value of your home, but that may be a minor concern for some pet owners.

CORK

Cork flooring is a nontraditional choice, but it’s great for pet owners.

A major benefit of this material is that it’s microbial, so if your pet does have an accident on the floor, it’s less likely that bacteria will grow. Cork also absorbs sound, so your pet won’t be loudly trotting through the house. It’s also fairly scratch-resistant (and if you choose a light color, scratch marks are hidden if they do develop).

LAMINATE

Laminate isn’t the best choice when it comes to pet-friendly flooring, but it’s still a viable option.

It’s water-resistant, but not waterproof. If your pet has an accident you want to make sure you clean it up as quickly as possible. Fortunately, laminate is easy to clean up and easy to care for. Laminate can be slippery and offer poor traction for animals, so be aware. It stands up well to scratching but will show signs of damage after a while.

Laminate is inexpensive, which makes it a great choice if you have a lot of space you’re re-flooring.
