HOW TO MOVE YOUR FURNITURE WITHOUT DAMAGING YOUR FLOORING
Disassemble
Before attempting to move your furniture it's always a good idea to disassemble it. This can make it easier to move and as well can protect it from damage, especially when navigating tight spaces. Just make sure to keep all the screws and bolts in a safe place so you can reassemble it later. Remember, the lighter and smaller the pieces, the less chance you have to scratch, ding, dent or scuff your flooring.
Take breaks
Lifting heavy items can strain your body, so take breaks when needed. Any time your back, arms, knees, legs or feet start to feel fatigued make sure to take a break and rest. It is not worth injuring yourself. Remember that the more sore or tired you get the greater the chance you will drop furniture and scuff or damage your flooring.
Use tools
Use tools like furniture sliders, dollies, hand trucks, and lifting straps to not only make the job easier but also to protect your furniture. Remember the right tools for the job always makes it easier and safer. Sliders attach to the bottom of the furniture and make the task easier to slide across the floor without damaging it. They also make it easier on your back. In general, straps allow you to move heavier items safely.
Dollies, hand trucks and lifting straps are also very useful tools when moving furniture. These tools allow you to easily move heavy items longer distances... while at the same time protecting your flooring. Remember to use dollies and lift trucks with rubber wheels.
Always lift with your knees and carry the furniture close to your body to avoid injury. If the furniture requires, use a dolly to make the job easier on you and your back. You can use a hand truck, 4-wheel dolly or appliance dolly.
Protect your furniture and flooring
If you're worried about breakage, scratches, scuff or dings you should always wrap your furniture with bubble wrap. This will also help protect your flooring in the case of dropped furniture.
Lay down cloth or other protective materials
Laying protective cloth or plastic wrap over your flooring will create a barrier that should help to protect your flooring investment. We recommend this for hardwood, LVP and for carpet. Drop cloths can also help prevent carpet snags in the moving process.
